Lions Clubs International – District 60B

History of District 60B

District 60B is part of the rich history and continued development of Lionism throughout the Caribbean. Lionism first came to Grenada in 1965 with the establishment of the Grenada Lions Club, marking the beginning of a long-standing tradition of humanitarian service and community leadership in the country.

As Lionism expanded across the Caribbean, the need for a stronger and more structured district organization became increasingly important. In 1975, a proposal was put forward to split the existing district, laying the groundwork for the restructuring that would eventually lead to the establishment of Multiple District 60.

A significant milestone was reached in 1980, when Multiple District 60 was established. As part of this restructuring, Grenada was shifted from Region 3 to facilitate the formation of a separate District 60B, providing the necessary number of clubs to establish a distinct district.

The first Multiple District Convention was held in Kingston, Jamaica, on June 28, 1980. During this historic period, Dr. Joe Robinson of Antigua became the first Council Chair and IPDG-60, while Cecil Sproul served as a member representing District 60B.

Since its establishment, District 60B has continued to grow in leadership, membership, service, and community impact. The district has played an important role in advancing the mission of Lions Clubs International throughout the Caribbean while providing opportunities for Lions and Leos to develop their leadership abilities and serve their communities.

District 60B has also achieved several significant leadership milestones. In 2009–2010, Shirley Quetel-Hendricks of St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands, became the first female District Governor of District 60B, marking an important moment in the district’s leadership history.

In 2012–2013, Tony Buncamper of St. Maarten became the first former Leo in the Multiple District to become District Governor of District 60B. His achievement highlighted the importance of the Leo program in developing young people and preparing them for future leadership within Lions Clubs International.

Today, District 60B represents a diverse family of Lions and Leo Clubs serving communities across Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the United States Virgin Islands.

The story of District 60B is one of service, growth, leadership, and transformation. From the establishment of Lionism in Grenada and the expansion of Lions Clubs throughout the Caribbean to the formation of District 60B and the achievements of its leaders, the district continues to build upon a proud legacy of humanitarian service.

As District 60B moves forward, its history remains a foundation for the future—honouring those who served before us, strengthening the service we provide today, and developing the Lions and Leos who will carry the legacy forward.
